Genuine Antique Hand-colored Map

1871

Maker: Walling & Gray.

Antique map of the compact portions of Boston, includes Cambridge, Somerville, Charlestown, East Boston, South Boston, Brookline, Brighton, Somerville, Chelsea and Everett. Inset map shows the present limits of the city of Boston. Shows roads, railroads, parks, squares, public buildings, and more. This map was produced in the middle of the project to fill Back Bay and includes a part of the Charles River with a street grid overlay. Two roads drawn into the water between South Boston and Boston Proper suggest early plans for the South Boston Waterfront. Original hand-coloring. Map measures approximately 14.75" x 23.5". Very good antique condition with some slight darkening along the center fold, some toning that is darker at the paper edges. Small separation at bottom along fold.
