Antique print of Whiskered Tern birds from John Gould's Birds of Great Britain, 1873. Gould produced Birds of Great Britain in several volumes from 1862-73, this print being from volume V, 1873. John Gould was an English ornithologist who published monographs on birds, illustrated by plates produced by his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and several other artists. This print was done with H. C. Richter and engraved by Walter. The Goulds published many notable works, and John continued publishing after his wife's death using illsutrartions by other artists. As a result of his 1840s seven-volume series The Birds of Australia and its updates he has been considered the father of bird study in Australia. Original color. Very good antique condition with some minor edge wear, very slight text image transfer, and some small mild spots. Measures approx. 14.5 x 21.5 inches to the paper edges.
