Maker: Seutter.
Antique hand colored map of England and Wales with parts of Scotland, Ireland, and France by Matthuas Seutter, c. 1740. This attractive map is based on Homann's earlier map of England and Wales. It is densely detailed with information on cities, towns, villages, churches, roads and canals. The prominent title cartouche includes an elaborate allegorical vignette where Mercury, patron god of commerce, gestures towards a flock of sheep and sacks of gold piled at the feet of Britannia while Neptune, god of the sea, points at a fleet of ships. Some nautical navigational information is included particularly around the mouth of the River Thames. Very good restored condition. This map has been cleaned, deacidified, and backed. Some tears have been archivally repaired. Measures approx. 22.5 x 19.25 inches to the neatline. **NOTE- because this map requires extra insurance for shipping, an additional charge will appear on your card after your original purchase.
