c. 1849
Maker: Dower / Orr & Company.
Antique hand colored map of the United States and Central America, drawn by J. Dower and published by Orr & Company, c. 1849. Very interesting borders - these seem to show the country in transition between the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (Mexican-American War) in 1848 and the Compromise of 1850. The border with Mexico is still changing, as is the Texas border. Upper of New California encompasses Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and part of New Mexico. At bottom are diagrams showing the height above sea level for two parts of the continent. Very good condition with a few tiny spots, 8.25 x 10 inches.
