Genuine Antique Map
1781
Maker: Gentleman's Magazine
Antique map of the largest islands of Guadeloupe by Jacques Nicolas Bellin, from Teatro della Guerra Marittima e Terrestre, dated 1781. This map includes Basse-Terre, Grande-Terre, Marie-Galante, and two Îles des Saintes—as well as many uninhabited islands. The Caribbean was an important battlefront between the French and British during the American Revolutionary War. From 1781, the French were endeavoring to capture British possessions, particularly Jamaica because the sugar production made it one of Britain's most profitable assets in the Americas. In 1782 the Battle of the Saintes took place in April. The British victory was considered their greatest over the French during the American Revolutionary War. This handsome, small map includes cities, some topography, a fort near modern day Grand-Bourg, Rhumb lines with fleur-de-lis, and hand-coloring. Very good antique condition with folds as issued and some slight wear to the printed image. Measures approx. 8 x 11.5 inches to the neatline.
