Antique hand colored map of the newly formed German Confederation. Published in Atlas Historique, Genealogique, Chronologique, Geographique by LeSage, c. 1827. The title translates to "Map of Current Political Germany from the Congress of Vienna or German Confederation; occasionally containing the Swiss Confederation". The objective of the Congress was to provide a long-term peace plan for Europe by settling critical issues arising from the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. The goal was not simply to restore old boundaries but to resize the main powers so they could balance each other and remain at peace. This map shows the changes made to Germany by the Congress- the orange line delineates the German Confederation while the colored areas show Prussia, Bavaria, the Empire of Austria, etc. The surrounding text is in French and explains the changes and implications. Very good condition with some minor wear and light stains at the paper edges in the margins. Center fold as issued. Map measures approx. 13.5 x 18.5. Total sheet size is approx. 20.75 x 27 inches.
