Antique hand colored maps of the City of Lawrence, and the Town and Village of Methuen, MA from Walker's 1884 Atlas of Essex County. Side one depicts the City of Lawrence at its height as the magnet American city for European immigrants and American farm girls as they flooded the area to work in its dozens of textile mills along the dammed Merrimack River, and shows public buildings and areas, churches, the river and its canals, railroads, roads, schools, and businesses, including all the named mills. Also shows a key to the nearly 30 churches reflecting the immigrant population and another key to geographical statistics. Side two displays the Town of Methuen and the Villgae of Methuen, including buildings with owners' names, public buildings and areas, water bodies, landforms, islands, railroads, roads, and schools. Very good overall antique condition with light overall toning and original colorist's mistakes as issued. Center spread of Lawrence measures approx. 25.5 x 16 inches, verso maps about half that size.
