Maker: Bien / US War Dept.
Antique hand-colored Civil War battle map by Bien and published by the US War Department. Shown on this map is the area where the Battle of Cold Harbor took place in Hanover County, Virginia. It was one of the final battles of Union Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's Overland Campaign, and is remembered as one of American history's bloodiest, most lopsided battles. Thousands of Union soldiers were killed or wounded in a hopeless frontal assault against the fortified positions of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's army. This map is dated 1867. Very good restored condition. This map has been archivally cleaned, deacidified, and rebacked. It has a closed tear on one side. Measures approx. 20 x 32.5 inches to the neatline.
