Antique hand colored map of part of South America, by Colton, c. 1879. This map is in two sheets and can be joined to create one larger map. Inset map shows the Southern Portion of the Peninsula of Patagonia on same scale as the main map, with the Falkland Islands. At the time of listing, this map was not available anywhere else. It has a copyright date of 1879 but may have been published in a slightly later atlas. This was produced during the time of Argentina's "Conquest of the Desert" during which many native people of Patagonia were killed or displaced in an effort to extend Argentine power in the as-yet uncolonized area. This military campaign effectively ended the possibility of Chilean expansion in Patagonia. Fascinating map produced in a time of great change in this region. Very good condition with some of the decorative border apparently trimmed off and close margins in other places. Each sheet is approx. 13.75 x 17.5 inches to the paper edges. **SOLD**
