Genuine Antique Hand-Colored Map
1859
Maker: Colton/Johnson & Browning.
Hand-colored comparative map showing the sizes of Lakes of the Western Hemisphere, Lakes in the Eastern Hemisphere, Islands in the Western Hemisphere, and Islands in the Eastern Hemisphere. Dated 1855, this map was published in Colton's General Atlas of 1859, which was published by Johnson and Browning. It was the only atlas on which both publishers' names appeared. At the time of printing, Lake Victoria, one of the largest lakes in the world, had been seen by Europeans, but it was not circumnavigated until 1875. Fair to good condition, with some spots and stains, including a water stain in the lower left corner. Tight margins. The person who colored this page in 1859 accidentally smeared some blue in the Lakes in the Western Hemisphere. Measures approx. 13 x 16 inches to the paper edges. Price has been reduced due to condition.
