1735
Maker: Moll
Antique hand colored map of Eastern North America c. 1735 by Herman Moll, from Atlas minor, or, A new and curious set of sixty-two maps ... printed for T. Bowles & J. Bowles. This rare and excellent antique map features many exciting examples of early understanding of North America, such as the large Louisiana that encompasses everything from Tallahassee to the Rio Grande, wonderfully amorphous Great Lakes, a tantalizing river stretching into the northwest suggesting a passage from the West Coast, the British colonies along the East Coast with dotted boundaries, and more. Florida appears to be colored as though it is owned by the British, although the British only owned Florida later, as well as Cape Breton Island which has a notation that it is owned by the French, so the coloring may not be trustworthy on this map! This map includes the names of Native America tribes in their area of inhabitance. Many words are misspelled, including Nantucket which is spelled Nantucher, as well as Pensilvania, Irrie Lake, Ilinese Lake, Barmudas I. and more. A delightful early map of North America that will surely be exciting to study and enjoy. Very good condition with some minor image transfer along center fold and some acid burn from the mat. Original hand coloring. Measures approx. 8 x 10.5 inches to the neatline and 14 x 16 inches to the frame edges. The framing does not appear to be archival and it should probably be reframed. **NOTE- because this map is framed, an additional charge for shipping will appear on your card after your original purchase. If you would like to know what that charge will be, please contact us.** Can be shipped unframed- price for the map remains the same but price for shipping would be reduced.
