1806
Maker: Vaugondy/Delamarche
Antique map of the world by Vaugondy, corrected and updated by Delamarche, 1806. Beautiful map of the world in two hemispheres with handsome hand coloring. This map shows the route of Captain Cook and reflects all of the latest information relating to Australia, New Zealand, Oceania, and the Pacific Northwest of North America. San Francisco is noted as S. Francois. The entire East Coast is noted as New England, with a smaller designation of United States appearing east of the Mississippi River. The Louisiana Territory is vaguely shown. Newfoundland was colored half red and half green because, after the Treaty of Paris, France had fishing rights on the western coast although the land belonged to Britain. This map was made during a time of significant change in the world and many of these events are reflected, such as France encompassing Belgium and the Netherlands during the Napoleonic Wars. A sea monster peers out from under the decorative cartouche. Framed- mat board is not archival and should be changed. Otherwise frame is in good condition. Map is in good to very good condition with some minor stains and discoloration under the matboard. Center fold as issued. Map measures approx. 11.25 x 16.75 inches to the mat opening. Total dimensions including frame 17 x 22. Can be shipped without frame, which will reduce the cost of shipping, but map price remains the same.
