Genuine Antique Map

1695

Maker: Mercator

Early map of Southeast Asia, by Mercator, c. 1695. This map shows geography that is different from our modern understanding of the world- the Ganges River is on the left side and China is on the right side of the map. The map reflects the ancient belief that the Indian Ocean was landlocked, and the area on the right side of the image (labeled Sinae, or China) was assumed to be connected to a large southern continent that encircled the body of water. Gorgeous map with hand-color, images of elephants and camels, and ships in the ocean. Very good antique condition with very mild foxing. Measures approx. 13.5 x 12.5 inches to the neatline.
