Antique map of the United States by Thomas Brown, c. 1812. This map was published as early as 1801, however our map has the year 1812 hand-written on it, so it may have been from a later printing. A fascinating glimpse into the early days of the country with many interesting and unusual boundaries. Maine is labeled "Main belonging to Massachusetts Bay" and clearly predates the Aroostook War. North Carolina stretched west, although the farther parts are labeled Cumberland and Holston (now Tennessee). Nashville and Knoxville are included on the map along with many other locations that are now major cities. A massive Western Territory between Pennsylvania and the Mississippi River is filled with the names of indigenous Native American Indians, as is the southern area above West Florida. East Florida is also indicated. Oddly, New Hampshire is not labelled. Very good antique condition with mild toning. Color may be later or retouched. Some tiny minor spots. Measures approx. 10.5 x 13 inches to the neatline.
