Maker: William Faden
Full Title: A New General Chart of the World, exhibiting the whole of the discoveries made by the late Capt James Cook, FRS, with the tracks of the ships under his command: Also those of Captain Phipps (now Lord Mulgrave) on his expedition to the North Pole
Antique map of the world centered on the Pacific, published by William Faden, 1787. Hand-colored. This map shows James Cook's three voyages through the South Seas and the Pacific, delineating many of the previously unknown coastlines. Much of North America's northwest coast remained unknown but shows the brand new country, United States on the east coast. Florida is noted, as is Louisiana Territory, and a few notations of Native American Indians appear. On Mercator's projection. Also plots the tracks of Phipps' voyage to the North Pole reaching north of Spitsbergen, shown in the upper left corner. This is the rare first edition, the chart is more commonly seen in its reissue, some 30 years later, by James Wyld who succeeded to William Faden's business. A fascinating map with the notable inscription around Hawaii in the mid-Pacific, "OWhyhee where Capt. Cook was Kill'd". Title is a Trompe-l'oeil: the artist made a decorative cartouche that looks like a paper or tapestry, rolled at the bottom and pinned up with some faux tears. Good antique condition with some separation along the center fold (repaired) and a crack or crease in the upper left. Some hinging tape on verso from being previously framed. Measures approx. 16 x 21.5 inches to the neatline.
