Antique chart of the eastern coast of Australia showing the course of Captain James Cook's first Endeavour voyage, 1768-1771. Engraved by W. Whitchurch, published in the official account of Cook’s first voyage, 1773. North is oriented to the right, with York Cape and Prince of Wales Island in the upper right of the map and Point Hicks in the lower left. The Explanation in the upper left indicates the symbols for rocks and sand in the water, the supposed direction of the coasts that were not seen, places the ship anchored, and the track of the ship. Includes some water depths and many of the names given to the islands, bays, capes, points, mountains, etc. by the Cook voyage. Good to very good antique condition, appears to have been restored/flattened. Some small spots, some slight toning at the paper edges and folds. There is a tear at the top that is connected to a diagonal crease and a slight crease and waviness on the right side. Tight margin on left. Visible plate mark. Measures approx. 14.25 x 31.25
