Genuine Antique Chart
1890
Maker: Hydrographic Office US Navy
Antique nautical chart of the Atlantic Coast of the United States published by the U.S. Hydrographic Office in 1885, edition of 1890. Compiled from surveys from 1884. This chart covers the coast from Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Buzzards Bay to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and includes Long Island and Long Island Sound, Delaware Bay to Philadelphia and Chesapeake Bay to Baltimore with the coasts of Southern Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, and North Carolina. This chart clearly highlights many of the important bays along the East Coast: Buzzard's Bay, Narragansett Bay, Long Island Sound, New York Harbor, Delaware Bay, Chesapeake Bay, and Pamlico Sound. We know of only two other examples of this rare chart, one in the Boston Public Library collection and one at another dealer's website. This chart shows lighthouses marked with red dots and yellow accents, and a list of lighthouses on left provides further information. It also shows buoys, water depths, bathymetric data, and more. Very good antique condition with mild toning, some slight vertical wrinkles, and some small spots/stains. Measures approx. 44.5 x 29.75 inches to the neatline.
