Antique map of Poitou in western France, by Ortelius, 1591. Poitou was a province of west-central France whose capital city was Poitiers. Both Poitou and Poitiers are named after the Pictones Gallic tribe. The secondary title "Pictonum Vicinarumque Regionum Fidiss Descriptio" translates to "Description of the Pictons and the Neighboring Regions." The main historical cities are Poitiers (historical capital city), Châtellerault (France's kings' establishment in Poitou), Niort, La Roche-sur-Yon, Thouars, and Parthenay. This map also includes La Rochelle, Limoges, Champagne-Mouton, and other cities and towns. Hand-colored, some of which may be original color and some added later. Very good antique condition with mild toning, a crease in the lower right corner, some other minor signs of age. Center fold is somewhat deep. Measures approx. 14.25 x 19.75 inches to the neatline.
