Antique map of the world from 1596. This is a miniature double-hemisphere world map, a copy of Mercator's map, engraved by Girolamo Porro and published by Giovanni Magini in Geographiae Universae. This map includes a huge southern continent Terra Australia with various notations, a large and round New Guinea, a round Japan, an easy northwest passage, no Australia or New Zealand, and interestingly shaped North and South America. A few sea monsters can be found in the Western Hemisphere, along with scattered islands throughout the oceans. Decorative strapwork surrounds the map along with a compass rose and an armillary sphere. Handsomely framed with double-matting and French lines. Map measures approx. 6 x 9.5 to neatline and the total size with the frame is approx. 14 x 17.5 inches.
