Antique charts, joined, showing the coast of Massachusetts from Rockport to Orleans published by the US Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1872 and updated to 1881. This chart is believed to have been used by the bark Wild Hunter, which was a notable clipper ship made at the Shiverick shipyard in Dennis, MA in 1855. It was originally sailed by Captain Joshua Sears until it was sold upon his retirement. The ship was re-rigged as a bark in 1873 and in 1882 it caught fire off the coast of Halifax and was lost. The chart features some land detail, six recognition profiles, bathymetric information, sailing directions, lighthouses and light buoys, water depths, and more. Great detail of Boston Harbor, Plymouth Harbor, and the Outer Cape to Provincetown. Good to very good condition with some mild surface soiling, some areas of slight surface loss, some wear at the edges, some minor stains. See Photos. This chart was made by joining Charts 9 & 10 and backing them with cloth and protecting the eges with a strip of fabric. All of this was done when the charts were originally purchased and the seller affixed their label to the back side. This chart will require additional insurance for shipping. Measures approx. 62 x 40.5 inches to the edges.
