Antique chart of Boston Harbor, first issued in 1867 and updated to 1878, published by the US Coast Survey. Shows the coast from Nahant and Lynn Harbor to Scituate Habor and includes the city of Boston, Hingham, Cohasset, Nantasket and the Boston Harbor islands as they were in the 1800s. This chart is believed to have been used by the bark Wild Hunter, which was a notable clipper ship made at the Shiverick shipyard in Dennis, MA in 1855. It was originally sailed by Captain Joshua Sears until it was sold upon his retirement. The ship was re-rigged as a bark in 1873 and in 1882 it caught fire off the coast of Halifax and was lost. The chart features some land detail, three recognition profiles, bathymetric information, sailing directions, lighthouses and light buoys, water depths, and more. This chart is in fair condition with some stains, some edge wear. Some paper loss in Cambridge that a previous owner attempted to repair but despite that, some holes remain. The vertical areas of darkening appear to be soot (may be possible to remove with some effort). Horizontal wrinkling. Not backed. Measures approx. 32.5 x 39.5 inches to the paper edges. Priced as is.
