Antique hand colored map of the East Coast of the United States by Giovanni Maria Cassini, 1797. This map is part of a set of maps that together create one of the first wall maps of the United States published in Europe. We currently have only this section. This sheet covers the area from Massachusetts to North Carolina and includes interesting coastal areas such as Cape Cod, Long Island, Chesapeake Bay, and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Many islands and towns and cities are labeled. Chatham is specifically mentioned on the map as "Chat-Ham Panta Sandy". Text is in Italian. Decorative cartouche. Measures approx. 13.5 x 19 inches. Very good antique condition with a repaired tear at center bottom and some minor stains in the margins.
