Genuine Antique Hand-Colored Map

1851

Maker: Levasseur.

Antique hand-colored map of the Seine Department, France, with Paris at the center, from the Atlas National Illustre des 86 Departments et des Possessions de la France, Divise par Arrondissements, Cantons et Communea, by Levasseur, 1851. Surrounded by exquisitely detailed engraved illustrations and vignettes, as well as statistical and general information.

Seine is a former department of France (1795–1968), which encompassed Paris and its immediate suburbs. Named after the river Seine which flowed through it, it was the only enclaved department of France, being surrounded entirely by the former Seine-et-Oise department. Its prefecture was Paris. When the Seine department was disbanded its territory was divided among four new departments: Paris, Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis and Val-de-Marne.

Very good overall antique condition with mild toning and wrinkling throughout, areas of mild foxing, and some minor edge wear including a small tear at the edge of the right margin. Measures approximately 11.75" x 17.5" (H x W) to the neatline.
