Genuine Antique Hand-Colored Map
c. 1840
Maker: Lizars.
Antique hand-colored map of Hungary, Transylvania, and provinces of Austria, by Lizars, circa 1840. Shows cities, towns, mountains, rivers, carriage roads, etc. This map predates the earliest railroads in the area. The first steam locomotive railway line was opened on 15 July 1846 between Pest and Vác. This date is regarded as the birth date of the Hungarian railways. The Romantic poet Sándor Petőfi rode on the first train and wrote a poem predicting that rails would connect Hungary like blood vessels in the human body. Measures approx. 14 3/4 x 18" to the neatline, in excellent condition.
