1859
Maker: Desilver.
Antique hand colored comparative map of the known mountains and rivers, from Desilver's "A New Universal Atlas Containing Maps of the various Empires, Kingdoms, States and Republics Of The World", 1859. At this time Mount Everest's height had been calculated and published in the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India but the mountain was known as Peak XY and it does not appear on this map (perhaps the data required verification). The source of the Nile had not yet been identified (the source of the Nile on this map is listed as the Mountains of the Moon). Lake Victoria was found by Europeans in 1858 but not confirmed as the source of the Nile until 1875. The tallest mountain on this map is Kunchinginga at 28,176 feet (Everest is 29,029 ft.). Good to very good condition with light toning at edges, slight image transfer, minor staining on left side, some small tears in edges, 12.5 x 16 inches to the edge of the decorative border.
