Genuine Antique Hand-Colored Map

1853

Maker: Mitchell/Cowperthwait, Desilver & Butler.

Antique hand-colored comparative map of the known mountains and rivers, from Mitchell's "New Universal Atlas, Containing Maps of the Various Empires, Kingdoms, States and Republics of the World, With a Special Map of Each of the United States, Plans of Cities, etc.", 1853. At this time Mount Everest's height had not yet been calculated and the source of the Nile had not yet been identified (the source of the Nile on this map is listed as the Mountains of the Moon). Lake Victoria was found by Europeans in 1858 but not confirmed as the source of the Nile until 1875. The tallest mountain on this map is Dwahalagiri at 26,262 feet (Everest is 29,029 ft). Some of the height comparisons in are interesting: Mount Wachusett is number 25, the elevations of various cities in shown, the pyramids, the highest elevation for various trees is also noted. Good to very good condition with overall toning, some minor spots/smudges, and some small tears and edge wear at the top that can be hidden when framing. Measures approx. 13 x 16 inches to the outer edge of the border.
