Maker: Carey
Antique map of Maine published by Mathew Carey in Carey's General Atlas, 1814. An important and early map of Maine, it shows the six county divisions as they were in 1798, not including the counties of Kennebec and Oxford, which were added in 1799 and 1804. At the time of publication, Maine was still a district of Massachusetts- it did not receive statehood until a few years later in 1823. This map was also published before the Aroostook War that decided Maine's northern border. The majority of the land was unknown, but there are many familiar places names in the southern portion, including Cape Neddick, Portland, Casco Bay, Monhegan Island, Bangor, Mount Desert Island, Belfast, Augusta, Moosehead lake (spelled Moos Head), and several old forts. Roads shown are carriage roads. Very good restored condition, this map has been cleaned, deacidified, and repaired, backed with light-weight paper. Measures approx. 15.25 x 11.25 inches to the neatline and 22 x 17.5 inches to the paper edges.
