Genuine Antique Map

1838

Maker: Dashiell Washington

Antique map of Maine by Dashiell Washington, circa 1838. This map was published before the boundary between Maine and Canada had been settled and shows the claims of each. The references on the map are lands granted to certain men, including John Baker, who raised an American flag on his property north of the St John River and was arrested, which set off a diplomatic incident between the US and Great Britain. The final boundary was arbitrated by the King of the Netherlands and finally signed in 1842, after the Aroostook War (an undeclared and largely bloodless conflict 1838-1839). This map also includes the contended and contemplated eastern boundaries as dotted lines. Includes the White Mountains of New Hampshire, labeled White Hills. Good restored condition. This map has been cleaned, deacidified, and backed with light-weight paper for structural support. Some paper loss at the corners has been professionally restored and separations repaired. Paper is wavy especially on left side. Measures approx. 17 x 15.5 inches to the neatline.
