Genuine Antique Map
1838
Maker: Thomas Moore's Lithography
Rare map of Marshfield, MA, on [lithographic] stone by J.E. Moody, published by Thomas Moore's Lithography, 1838. This is the earliest printed map of the town of Marshfield. It includes a key that corresponds to the symbols on the map for meeting houses, schools, factories and mills, woodland, and meadow, with some topography indicated on the map as well. It is rare to find such an early town map that shows all of the roads and has all of the property owners labeled by name. This map includes the property of Daniel Webster near the bottom of the page. In 1830, each town in Massachusetts was required to survey the town and submit a map which would be used to create a large comprehensive map of the state. John Ford Jr. completed his map in 1831 and it was sent to the state. This map was created using the information from his map and surveys, with the addition of property owner information. The 1831 map is still held in the state's archives. This map is in fair to good restored condition. It has been professionally archivally restored yet retains some lingering spots and stains. It was previously trimmed to the neatline and has newly added margins. Some small tears and paper loss have been archivally repaired and the map has been backed with a sturdy backing. It measures approx. 29 x 20.5 inches to the neatline.
