Genuine Antique Map

1849

Maker: Lea & Blanchard

Antique black and white map of the Dead Sea including depths, notes about the quality of the sediment at the bottom of the water (soft blue mud with crystals, saltish crust, ashy mud, etc.,) and notes on the surroundings of the river. The map was published by Lea and Blanchard in 1849, based on the observations of the 1848 expedition led by William F. Lynch, a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, which explored the Dead Sea and the River Jordan and was the first exploration by Europeans or Americans to determine that the Dead Sea was below sea level. Good antique condition with toning of the paper, text image overlay, larger spots of noticeable foxing/staining, wrinkling of the paper in the lower right corner, and a couple areas of seam separation. With folds, as issued. Measures approximately 24.75" x 13" to the neatline.
