1859
Maker: Colton/Johnson & Browning.
Mountains & Rivers Comparative Map, showing the principal mountains and rivers in the world as known in 1859. This comparative map is stunning for its composition, artistic layout and information. Some of the information in now known to be inaccurate, for example, the Mississippi and Missouri River is listed as the longest river and the source of the Nile was not yet known. This map was published by Johnson & toning in Colton's General Atlas, the only atlas that includes the two well-known names of Johnson & toning and Colton. Good condition with brown spots mostly in the margins, toning in the center fold, and a tight upper margin that has a slight water stain. Color and strike of image are good and map is whole. Map measures approx. 16.5 x 23.5 inches to the neatline.
