Antique hand colored map by Colton, with insets of Vicinity of St. Louis, and Plan of the South Eastern Portion of Missouri. The Colton firm refused to compromise quality, choosing to compete for sales in the finer quality international market rather than the inexpensive domestic one. Because of this, all maps were engraved by steel plates rather than by wax engraving which was the most common method used at this time. Fair to good antique condition, light water damage mostly outside border, paper is slightly wavy and toned overall, approx. 17 x 24 inches.
