Genuine Antique Map

1804

Maker: Carey

Antique map of what was Ohio and the Northwest Territory, now Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin, from the American Pocket Atlas by Mathew Carey, 1804 edition, this map engraved by W. Barker. Shows towns, main roads, rivers, lakes, mountains, etc. Ohio became a state in 1805. Possibly one of the earliest maps to note Chicago (Chicago T. for town). Indiana and Illinois are "Indian Territory" and there are boundaries in Ohio indicating Indian Line, Army Lands, Virginia Lands, and Ranges. A few forts dot the land, but there are large areas that have not been changed by settlers from the East. Nice representation of the Great Lakes. Very good restored condition; this map has been archivally cleaned but retains some minor stains/tiny spots. Small repaired tear on the western edge of Lake Superior. Measures approx. 7.75 x 5.75 inches to the neatline.
