1800
Maker: Russell / Guthrie
Antique map engraved by Russell and probably from a Guthrie atlas, c. 1800. Hand-colored. A fascinating look at North America in the early 1800s. Alaska's coast is known but still incorrectly drawn, much of the west is unknown, Quivira is noted (fabled land of gold), an imaginary River of the West has been included showing the hope of a river that allowed passage across the continent, Mexico is labeled New Spain, Texas is noted along with the Louisiana territory, East and West Florida are shown, the United States reached the Mississippi River, New England almost reaches Nova Scotia. Shows locations of Native American peoples, and well as cities and states. Very good antique condition with mild toning, and some minor spots. Measures approx. 7.5 x 8.75 inches to the neatline.
