Genuine Antique Map
1750 circa
Maker: Albrizzi
Antique map of North America by G. Albrizzi, circa 1750. Marvelous early map showing the Azores to California with detailed depictions of the Caribbean, southern part of North America, and the east coast to Greenland and Baffin Bay. Some cities depicted as fortsincluding Mexico City, Saint Augustine FL (S. Agostino), Quebec, and Santa Fe (located in the center of North America). Good representation of the Great Lakes. The Mississippi River Valley and the Rio Grande are still very inaccurate, however there are lots of details including many Indian Tribes and early settlements west of the Mississippi. There are also many settlements depicted in Florida and along the Gulf as well as many settlements along the California Coast. Quivira, once thought to be a city full of gold and silver, is shown just southwest of the Great Lakes. Almost none of the mountain ranges are known. Large Florida stretches to Mexico. Many of the boundaries, shown as dotted lines, are left unfinished. The cartouche vignette shows Neptune being pulled to shore by Sea Serpents while riding on a clam shell. This map also includes the routes of some explorers in the Pacific: Drake, Cortez, and Olivier. Based upon the earlier 1708 Map by De L'Ise. Text in Italian. Very good antique condition with some mild foxing, some slight separation at the fold in the margins, slight waviness to the antique paper. Copperplate engraving on laid paper with visible plate mark. Measures approx. 13 x 17 inches to the neatline.
