Framed Vintage Reproduction
1967
Maker: Barre Publishers
High-quality 1960s reproduction of the Des Barre's charts with Portsmouth New Hampshire and East Point of Fletchers Neck Maine, originally published in the Atlantic Neptune in the 1770s. The Atlantic Neptune is a monumental four volume atlas which was the most important collection of maps, charts and views of North America published in the eighteenth century. Colonel Joseph Frederick Wallet Des Barres and Samuel Holland (who surveyed the New England coast), among others, spent years surveying to create the most comprehensive charts of the coast of North America for the British Admiralty, finally published in 1777. This reproduction was made in 1967 by Barre Publishers, printed using a high-quality photograveur process to exactly replicate original charts in the collection of Augustus Loring, printed on high-quality rag paper and hand-colored. The process was so time consuming and expensive that the publisher abandoned the project part way through. This chart is two joined sheets that show part of the coast of Massachusetts including Newburyport, the coast of New Hampshire, and the coast of Maine up to Cape Elizabeth. Includes Hampton Harbor, Rye, Star Island, Isles of Shoals, and Portsmouth in NH, and Kittery, York, Ogunquit, Kennebunkport, Saco, Wells Maine. Framed in painted green frame (frame is in fair condition with some signs of age, on back is a piece of cardboard that says November 1971, the glass is old and should be replaced). The chart is in good condition with some minor spots, some staining. Measures approx. 30.75 x 43 inches. Total size framed is 34.25 x 46.5 inches. This frame cannot be shipped. If you purchase this item with shipping, you will receive the chart without the frame. Price remains the same if the chart is purchased with or without the frame.
