Genuine Antique Map

1853

Maker: Valentine

Antique hand-colored map of the southern portion of Manhattan, published in D.T. Valentine's Manual, 1853, Lith by Geo. Hayward. This map shows a fascinating overlay of Manhattan as it once was with the old roads, farms, and estates, along with the contemporary (1853) street grid of New York City. Streets up to 51st St. You can see how the city was built out and enlarged. This was often done using a system called "wharfing" where the area between wharves were filled and new wharves built out into the water. This map was printed on light-weight paper and has been archivally restored- cleaned and backed with light-weight archival paper for structural support. Very good restored condition with some slight waviness to the antique paper, tight margin on left side. Measures approx. 12.5 x 8.5 inches to the neatline.
