Antique map of Manhattan, New York City, comparing the island as it was in 1609 with the island in 1909, by Townsend MacCoun, published 1909. This map depicts the elevation, water-courses, marshes and shore lines as surveyed in the early colonial days by Ratzer, Montresor, Knypthausen, Bradford, Duyckinck, etc. and the survey of 1867 by General Viele. The "present" aka 1909 streets and shoreline are overlaid. Native American Indian nomenclature in red. Manhattan can be roughly translated from native language to mean "island of hills" and this rare and unusual map shows those hills clearly. It was published by Townsend MacCoun as part of a series of five historical maps of Manhattan and the NYC area. This map was folded into a cover when issued and it retains the original folds, although we are displaying it flat, which will reduce the visibility of the folds. Very good antique condition with some tiny spots, mild toning, and some small separations at the fold intersections. Measures approx. 12.25 x 47.5 inches to the neatline and approx. 16.25 x 52 inches to the paper edges.
