Antique map of Australia published by Edward Stanford in The Family Atlas under the superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, 1860. Includes insets of Tasmania or Van Diemen Land and a map of the world showing the distances to Australia from various locations around the world. Small lists on both sides for the counties in each Australian State. Much of the country was unexplored by Europeans at this time. Steel plate engraving with original hand-coloring. SDUK maps are known for being highly detailed, including topography, towns, villages, roads, railroads, canals, etc. Fair to good condition with some image transfer aka ghosting, foxing, and some mild toning. Tight margins on sides as issued. Measures approx. 15.5 x 27 inches to the neatline.
