Antique print from the Atlas to Barclay's Universal English Dictionary, Newly Revised by B.B. Woodward, published by Virtue & Company circa 1850. Undated. This print features King Alfred, (born 849—died 899), king of Wessex (871–899), a Saxon kingdom in southwestern England. He prevented England from falling to the Danes and promoted learning and literacy. Compilation of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle began during his reign, circa 890. Very good antique condition, backed on fabric with mild spots. Measures approx. 11 x 8.5 inches to the paper edges.
