Antique black and white engraved illustration, sketched by E. R. Morse, showing a view of the tragic Granite Mill fire which destroyed the original Granite Mill No. 1 in Fall River, Massachusetts, on September 19th, 1874. This print is the front page of the October 3, 1874 edition of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper and shows firefighting and rescue efforts underway as victims of the fire jump out of windows to escape, the tallest windows being six stories high. The caption for the image reads, "The Fall River Disaster.-Great Fire and Loss of Life in the Print Works, Granite Mill No. 1, Fall River, Mass., September 19th- The Victims Driven From The Windows." The fire ultimately killed 23 people, most of them children, and wounded many others. As a result of this tragedy, mills were subsequently built with flat roofs, due to the difficulty firefighters faced in their attempt to put out the flames from the sloped roof of Granite Mill No. 1. Very good antique condition with mild toning of the paper throughout, some very minor spots of foxing/soiling, and some very minor wrinkling of the paper. Page measures approximately 16.5" x 11.5" overall.
