Genuine Antique Hand-Colored Map

1861

Maker: Tardieu.

Antique map of Paris, France, by Tardieu, 1861. This map was published at the time of Haussmann's renovation of Paris that was commissioned by Emperor Napoleon III, during which much of the old city was demolished to make way for new roads, buildings, parks, etc. This map includes the famous Boulevard du Crime (Boulevard du Temple) with theaters labeled- those theaters were demolished in the great reorganization of 1862 to make space for new roads and the area known today as Place de la Republique. The hand colored lines around the city show the ever enlarging city limits with a key to which ruler expanded the city to that size. Inset map shows another, even larger expansion. All information is written in French. Original color. Very good overall antique condition with mild toning throughout and a few spots of very mild foxing. With center fold as issued. Measures approx. 13.5 x 17 inches to the neatline, and 16.25 x 21 inches overall.
