Hand-colored woodcut engraving of the city of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, from William Cullen Bryant's classic 1872 work, "Picturesque America." Includes a view of the Whale Back Lighthouse, Appledore Island, the Church on Star Island, and Star Island. Reverse of page includes text discussing Gloucester and a quote from Longfellow. Note: any "rainbows" or strange patterns in the image are called moire pattern- caused by taking a digital photo or scan of the many parallel lines in the print- these are not in the print and we can try to take more photos if you are concerned. This piece measures 9.5 x 6.5 inches to the print border and is in very good antique condition.
