1855
Maker: Appleton
Antique steel engraving print published in The Scenery of The United States by D. Appleton and Co, 1855, which shows a view from the Mississippi River of what we believe to be now the White Cliffs, in the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument in Montana, part of the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail. On May 31, 1805, the expedition passed through the White Cliffs region of the Missouri Breaks. Lewis characterized the landscape as exhibiting “a most romantic appearance." Good to very good antique condition with mild toning of the paper overall and some areas of minor foxing/staining. Page measures approximately 7.75" x 11" overall. Note: any "rainbows" or strange patterns in the image are called moire pattern- caused by taking a digital photo or scan of the many parallel lines in the print- these are not in the print and we can try to take more photos if you are concerned.
