Genuine Antique Print

1867

Maker: Harper's Weekly

Antique illustration showing a view of the Exposition Universelle of 1867, better known in English as the 1867 Paris Exposition. It was held on the Champ-de-Mars, where the Eiffel Tower now stands. It had not yet been created at the time of this print. Depicted as if from a bird's-eye view above the Seine, we see the great palace of the exposition and the busy streets full of horse-drawn carriages and pedestrians. This important event had many lasting effects on culture- Japan exhibited artwork in the West for the first time at this show and such works went on to inspire many European artists like Van Gogh. Countries showed their latest technologies and discoveries, which inspired others, such as Jules Vern who wrote 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea after seeing the submarine. This engraving was published in Harper's Weekly on February 16, 1867. On a separate page attached at the back side is a detailed plan of the palace and park. Good to very good antique condition with some minor stains, overall toning, some small binding holes at center, and slight waviness to the antique paper (sometimes called cockling). The image appears to have been engraved on several separate plates and the slight lines between the printing plates are slightly visible. Measures approx. 13.5x 20.5 inches to the image edges and 15.5 x 21.25 inches to the paper edges.

Note: any "rainbows" or strange patterns in the image are called moire effect- caused by taking a digital photo or scan of the many parallel lines in the engraved print- these are not in the print and we can try to take more photos if you are concerned.
