Antique map of part of the Strait of Magellan by Etienne Andre Philippe de Pretot, from Atlas Universel, circa 1787. Title translates to Geometric Plan of Several Bays Situated in the Strait of Magellan, Between Capes Round and Forward. This map depicts a section of the Strait of Magellan, centering roughly on Baye de Bougainville. The French navigator Louis-Antoine de Bougainville passed through the strait on his way to Tahiti during his circumnavigation (1766-69). Other bays include Francoise, Bournand, and Bouchage. There are also several anchorages, soundings, and hazards indicated. Very good condition with mild toning, some tiny spots, and some mild stains in the margins. Measures approx. 5 x 8.75 inches to the neatline.
