Genuine Antique Hand Colored Map
1876
Maker: Comstock & Cline.
Antique map of part of Wellesley, MA from the Atlas of Norfolk County Massachusetts, From Recent and Actual Surveys & Records, under the Superintendence of W.A. Sherman. This map shows the intersection of Grove St and Charles River Street with the Charles River winding from the left side and along the bottom of the page. Ridge Hill Farms became quite famous in the 1870s due to the unusual grounds, whimsical features, and notable large parties (up to three thousand attendants!). Mr. Baker began receiving requests from people far and wide to visit the grounds, and eventually it became such a burden that he set up a system of accepting visitors on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The library of congress holds a guide to the grounds of Ridge Hill Farms that is 152 pages long and includes a map with 44 locations noted, such as the Gnome Drinking Fountain, Peacock House, the 1636 pig monument, a camera obscura, and multiple bear pits. Good condition, approx. 15 x 12 inches.
