Genuine Antique Map
1794/1796
Maker: Samuel Lewis / Mathew Carey.
Antique map of Eastern Canada, by Samuel Lewis, published in "The General Atlas for Carey's Edition of Guthrie's Geography Improved" edition of 1796. With inset of Hudson's Bay and Baffin's Bay. Shows the Great Lakes, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island when is was called Isle St. John or Ile Saint-Jean. This map was published shortly after the Revolutionary War, and shows the new boundary between the United States and the British Possessions, which famously went through the Great Lakes and to the Lake of the Woods, then to the Mississippi River... but unbeknownst to the men who agreed on the boundary, the Mississippi River does not extend that far north. Very good overall restored condition, this map has been cleaned and backed but shows some minor signs of age including mild stains and repaired tears and paper loss at edges. Measures 15 x 17.25 inches to the neatline.
