C. 1612-1616
Maker: Speed / Hondius.
Antique hand colored map of Lincoln, England, engraved by Jodocus Hondius and published by John Speed. This map is from one of the earlier editions of Speed's renowned "Theatre Of The Empire Of Great Britain" probably C.1612-1616. Later versions include amendments and alterations to publishers' imprints. Speed's county maps were, and remain, amongst the most popular and sought-after because of the decorative and informative content. Most have the arms of local dignitaries and town plans, in many cases the first of those locations and surveyed by Speed himself. For this atlas, Speed had prepared the maps for engraving before 1610, and they appeared in the first atlas two years later. Also includes a strapwork title cartouche with a royal crest and a compass rose, a scale cartouche with compass and putti, armorials, a stylised battle, and a fantastic sea monster. On verso is an English text history of the county and a list of the Hundreds and Wapentakes in Lincolnshire. Overall good to very good condition with very tight margins, toned and slightly wavy paper. Color is likely later. Center fold as issued and one additional vertical crease. Highly collectible early edition Speed map. Measures approx. 15 x 20 inches to the neatline. **NOTE- because this map requires extra insurance for shipping, an additional charge will appear on your card after your original purchase.
