1856
Maker: A.K. Johnston.
Antique map from "The Physical Atlas of Natural Phenomena" by Alexander Keith Johnston, published by William Blackwood and Sons in 1856. This beautifully detailed map is a very early example of the use of printed color. Insets include Volcanic Kingdom of Luzon (the Philippines), Comparative View of the height of the Crest & of the Culminating Points of the Great Mountain Chains by Baron Von Humboldt, Comparative View of the Mean Height of the Continents, Section Across the Himalaya, a Geological Map of Java, Section from Jerusalem to the Dead Sea, and the Raising of the Island of Racuain. In very good antique condition with overall toning and foxing and small seam separation at bottom margin beyond the neatline (this separation has been repaired with tape that may or may not be archival), this piece measures approximately 20 x 24 inches.
